Letter to the editor,

Jewish Georgians must help persuade Georgia legislators to pass HB 426 “Georgia Enhanced Penalties for Hate Crimes Act” when the legislature reconvenes June 15 for just 11 days. Now is the time to stand with the black community and all communities targeted by hate, including our Jewish community. Let’s be a part of something big!

It only requires two minutes to make your voice heard.  Text “hatefreega” to 52886 to sign HateFreeGA’s petition demanding hate crimes legislation in Georgia in 2020.

Visit Coalition for a Hate Free Georgia https://atlanta.adl.org/hate-free-ga/ to see the 35 participating organizations advocating for better hate crime laws in Georgia in 2020. You will also find links to email our senators and lieutenant governor demanding passage of HB 426 “as is, with no amendments,” along with phone numbers for your representatives.

Seventy executives of Georgia’s most powerful corporations (BlackRock, Coca-Cola, Delta Airlines, Georgia-Pacific, Georgia Power, The Home Depot, UPS, etc., and leaders of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce) have come together, www.passhatecrimesga.com,  calling for lawmakers to adopt a “comprehensive, specific and clear” hate crimes when the legislature reconvenes June 15.  All eyes are on the Georgia legislature to do the right thing!

Steve Oppenheimer, Atlanta
