Atlanta Jewish Academy student Dan Jutan was recognized as AJA’s STAR student at the Professional Association of Georgia Educators luncheon Wednesday, March 8.

Dan’s choice for his STAR teacher, math teacher Bill Shillito, also was honored at the event, recognizing the high school seniors who finished in top 10 percent in class rank and had their schools’ highest SAT scores.

Dan enjoys software development and has won multiple awards over the years in the Georgia Technology Fair competition. He and fellow senior Ezra Blout make short weekly parshah videos that explore Torah commentaries and showcase their lessons. Dan’s hobbies include playing Magic: The Gathering.

He plans to spend a gap year in Israel at Yeshivat Har Etzion, then study computer science and focus on human-computer interaction in college.

Shillito changed his attitude toward math, which he’d thought was boring, difficult and unrewarding, Dan said. “He opened my eyes to the world of mathematics, an exciting, beautiful, creative expression that, with Mr. Shillito’s guidance, I study but also experience as a vast playground that extends beyond the classroom.”
