Sandy Springs City Council Approves Plan for City Center

Plan including a performing arts center approved by unanimous vote Sandy Springs City Center Planning

As part of the ongoing process to develop a downtown area for the city of Sandy Springs, the Sandy Springs City Council on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, approved a site development plan for the City Center.  The plan includes office space to house government services, green space, residential and retail areas, in addition to meeting space and a performing arts center.  The total program cost is estimated up to approximately $196,600,000.

“This is the most important project the community has undertaken since we began as a city,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul.  “We have spent more than two years working on this project, beginning with the Goody Clancy study under the previous Council. At each step, we carefully considered every avenue possible to incorporate a wide range of public input – the bulk of which favored the plan Council approved. This is an exciting project we believe will be a catalyst for creating a more walkable, more functional, more vibrant city center.”

During a special called meeting on August 27, 2014, City Manager John McDonough and members of the City Center development team, including Carter/Selig, Rosser International and jB+a, presented the City Council with four site development options.  The presentation also included a programming summary for parking; government space; retail space; meeting space; performing arts center; multi-function facility and residential.  The action by the City Council in adopting a site plan enables the development team to move forward with Phase I implementation activities.
