The story of Hanukkah gives us much to think about. The lighting of the Hanukkah candles and the victory of Judah Maccabee teach us important lessons. First, the light of Judaism cannot be extinguished; it continues to burn through difficult times. Second, though the Maccabean army was small in number, their commitment and determination to win was great.

We are facing challenges as Americans, Jews and citizens of the world. There have always been those who would seek to undermine the heritage of Judaism and the freedom and democracy of America. Remembering and being inspired by the Maccabees, our strength and resolve will not let them win.

Ronald Bluming has been the chaplain at The Renaissance on Peachtree since 2012.
