The Marcus Jewish Community Center’s modified fast-pitch softball league finished the spring season Sunday, June 19, with the championship and all-star games at Honeysuckle Park in Doraville. In the tournament finals, captain Jody Blanke’s squad beat David Weidenbaum’s team, 8-5. Three days earlier on Thursday, Weidenbaum’s team won the regular season title over Gene Benator’s team, 9-6.

The league finals came down to battles between the elder statesmen on the mound.

The regular season championship game was the NL champion team captained by David Weidenbaum (8-2) beating the AL Champion team captained by Gene Benator (6-4).  It was a pitching duel between 66 year old Benator and 65 year old Bruce Beck. Gene’s team broke out to a 3-0 lead in the first, but Bruce ultimately won the battle on the mound. In the end, a few clutch hits by Lawrence Kass and Bruce Beck were enough for David’s team to pull out a 9-6 come from behind victory.
The tournament championship game between Jody Blank’s team and David Weidenbaum’s also was highlighted by ‘experienced’ pitchers. 61 year old Jody Blanke took the mount against 65 year old Bruce Beck. In this case, Jody’s squad jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead, but David’s team battled back to 7-5, but they could get no closer.  the final score was 8-5.

The JCC men’s modified fast-pitch league plays in the fall and spring. The fall season starts in late August.
