The Humanitarian Situation in the Gaza Strip

THE MOVEMENT OF GOODS AND PEOPLE THROUGH THE CROSSINGS
SPECIAL FOR THE AJT

Despite the ongoing rocket fire from Gaza, and the infiltration into Israel of dozens of Hamas terrorists through tunnels under the route of the humanitarian crossings between Israel and Gaza, the Kerem Shalom crossing opened today (21 July) only one hour later than usual. During the day, Israeli authorities facilitated the entry of 67 trucks and tankers into Gaza carrying food and fuel.

Since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge (8 July), 673 trucks entered the Gaza Strip from Israel, carrying food and medicines. In addition, 4.5 million liters of diesel and fuel for Gaza’s power station and for transportation entered Gaza. More than 2,300 Palestinians, humanitarian personnel and journalists have passed through the Erez crossing into and out of Gaza.

Since the beginning of the operation, 1,272 Palestinians and others, including international humanitarian personnel, have crossed from the Gaza Strip into Israel through Erez Crossing, while 1,066 entered Gaza. So far, Israel coordinated 27 cases of back-to-back ambulance transfer procedures, mainly from Gaza to Israel (58 Palestinian patients were hospitalized in Israel).

247 Jordanian hospital staff members crossed into Gaza to replace their colleagues. 1,000 units of blood from Jordan and the Red Cross were transferred to Gaza. Yesterday (20 July) Israel opened a field hospital near the Erez crossing in order to treat injured and sick Palestinian civilians.

Summary of infrastructure repairs since 8 July:

Israel performed 24 repairs to infrastructure to the Gaza Strip: 10 electrical repairs, 10 water supply repairs, 2 sewage repairs, and 2 communication repairs. On Friday (18 July), two high voltage lines supplying electricity from Israel to the northern Gaza Strip were repaired, despite the dangers to which Israeli Electrical Corporation workers were exposed due to Hamas firing rockets at this area. The two lines provide a total of 25 megawatts from Israel to some 40,000 people in the Gaza Strip.
