Dave Cohn New Emory Hillel Head

Cohn started at Emory Hillel in July, filling a position that Rabbi Russ Shulkes had held while also leading Hillels of Georgia.

Emory Hillel has a new director: Dave Cohn, a former high school band director and music teacher who this year completed master’s degrees in public administration from the University of Southern California and in Jewish nonprofit management from the Los Angeles campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion while working with Hillel at UCLA.

Cohn started in July, filling a position that Rabbi Russ Shulkes had held while also leading Hillels of Georgia. Rabbi Shulkes remains the executive director of Hillels of Georgia, based at the Marcus Hillel Center at Emory.

Cohn, a Chicago native, spent two years at Hillel at UCLA after five years of leading the music education program at Larchmont Temple in Westchester County, N.Y., and three years as a high school band director in the Chicago public schools.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006.

According to his Hillel biography, Cohn was inspired to pursue a Jewish communal career by his time as a camper and a staffer at Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute, a Jewish summer camp in the Milwaukee area.

Cohn is married to Sarah Ruben, an early childhood educator. They are the parents of a toddler, Selah.
