The Southeast Region of Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) is proud to announce that prominent business and philanthropic leader Garry Sobel of Atlanta has been appointed to the National FIDF Board of Directors. Sobel has also been serving as the FIDF Southeast Region Chairman.

“Garry’s appointment to the FIDF National Board is a testament to his passion and dedication to the soldiers serving in the IDF,” said FIDF Southeast Region Executive Director, Seth Baron. “I consider myself fortunate to have such a committed individual to lead the charge on behalf of FIDF in the Southeast Region and now nationally. This is a well-deserved honor for Garry and our soldiers will be proud of his leadership.”

The National FIDF Board of Directors supports the work of FIDF and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance.

While day-to-day operations are led by the FIDF National Executive Director and CEO, the involvement of the National FIDF Board of Directors is both critical and expected. Currently, there are 70 FIDF National Board Members from across the 15 FIDF Chapters in the United States and Panama.

Sobel is Senior Vice President of the Kaufman Realty Group and a longtime leader in the local Jewish community. He became involved in the FIDF Georgia Regional Chapter in 2007 and has helped expand the chapter’s impact, expanding its focus beyond Atlanta to Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Kentucky.

Sobel was instrumental in recruiting Baron as the Southeast Region Executive Director, and has led efforts to broaden the chapter’s base among young leaders and other community groups.

“In the past few years, we have solidified our position in the Atlanta community, and I am excited to build on the momentum that we have recently created throughout the entire Southeast Region,” said Sobel. “For me it’s a simple proposition; the brave young men and women of the IDF and their families are making great sacrifices to ensure the safety and security of the State of Israel and for Jews everywhere, and every member of our Jewish communities owes them a debt of gratitude for their service.”

The FIDF Southeast Region will be holding its Annual Gala on May 15 at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. Guests will have the opportunity to hear from keynote speaker, Israel’s Defense Attaché to the U.S. and Canada, Major General Yaacov Ayish, pay tribute to the 21 soldiers currently serving in the IDF as Lone Soldiers and originally from Atlanta, and enjoy a performance by the extraordinary IDF Music Ensemble.
