Obituary: Ruth-Anne Hackner

The native of South Africa was a devoted mother and active volunteer in Jewish Atlanta.

Ruth-Anne Hackner, who died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, was born to Joel and Lezley Goodman, of blessed memory, on July 14, 1958, in Johannesburg, South Africa. She earned an undergraduate degree and a master’s in business administration from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Having written her thesis on portfolio theory, Ruth worked as a management consultant for Deloitte in South Africa.

She married and immigrated to the United States in 1984. Arriving in Chicago, Ruth worked for Mesirow Financial as the director of financial marketing, and several years later Ruth’s two children, Stacy and David, were born. Ruth was a devoted mother to her children and was very supportive in all their endeavors. After the birth of her children, Ruth’s interests moved to Jewish community service, where she volunteered for many community organizations, most recently the Book Festival of the Marcus Jewish Community Center, the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival and the National Jewish Book Council’s debut fiction committee.
