He was a native of Venezuela and graduate of Oglethorpe who was known for his blue-ribbon orchids.

John moved to the United States to attend Roosevelt Military Academy and graduated from North Springs High School, Class of 1972, before matriculating at the University of Georgia, where he began his lifelong relationship with the Jewish community when he joined the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. After graduating from Oglethorpe University, he began working for the First National Bank of Atlanta and soon met Tina (Decatsky) Mehler, the mother of his three sons.
