Daffodil Project

November 8, 2015 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Free

Congregation Beth Shalom is working in conjunction with Am Yisrael Chai on the Daffodil Project. We will be planting 540 daffodils in remembrance of the children who perished in the Holocaust.

The program begins at 10:30 a.m. with a brunch and speaker Ilse Eichner Reiner, who was born in Vsetin, Czechoslovakia. She remembers a happy childhood filled with family and community events. In 1942, her father was imprisoned and later deported to Majdanek, where he was murdered. When Ilse’s mother was deported to Ravensbruk, Ilse was placed in an orphanage, and she later was transported to Theresienstadt, where she lived in the children’s barracks for two years. Of the 15,000 children imprisoned in Terezin, only 132 are known to have survived, and Ilse is one of them. In 1944, Ilse was crammed into a cattle car and transported to Auschwitz. In 1945 she was forced on a death march, from which she escaped and was finally liberated by the Russians. She has written a book about her story, “Through the Eyes of a Child,” published in 2008. Today she lives in Sandy Springs and is an artist and active member of the community. She will speak about Jewish life in Czechoslovakia before the war as it relates to Beth Shalom’s  Holocaust Torah restoration.
