Atlanta Premiere: Million Dollar Quartet

By Debbie Diamond / AJT//

Tony® Award Winning Broadway musical Million Dollar Quartet will be at the Fox Theatre March 12-17 as part of the Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta Series.  Set on December 4, 1956, the play captures an auspicious moment in time that brought together Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley for what became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history.

MDQ-New-LogoSam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” who was responsible for launching the career of each icon, had assembled this legendary group at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time all four would be together. The evening later became known as one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history.

Tickets start at $33 and will be available at the Fox Theatre box office, by visiting www.FoxAtlTix.com/flashdance or by calling 1-855-ATL-TIXX. Group orders of 10 or more may be placed by calling 404-881-2000.

Show promoters promise to bring this night to life by featuring tales of broken promises, secrets, betrayal and celebrations.  The eclectic score of rock, gospel, R&B and country hits will include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Matchbox,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” and “Hound Dog.”

Original Broadway cast members will play lead roles in the Atlanta show, with Robert Britton Lyons as Carl Perkins; Martin Kaye as Jerry Lee Lewis; David Elkins as Johnny Cash; and Cody Slaughter as Elvis Presley.   When they opened in the 2010 Broadway production, critics and audiences embraced the show.

The New York Times called Million Dollar Quartet “a buoyant new musical that whips the crowd into a frenzy.”  New York Magazine labeled it, “a dazzling raucous spectacle that sounds like a million bucks.” The musical continued its successful New York engagement at New World Stages through June 2012.  It also played several years in London and continues its run in Chicago.

Million Dollar Quartet won a Tony Award® for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and received a Tony Award® nomination for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical (Colin Escott & Floyd Mutrux). The show received an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Musical Revue and three Drama League nominations including Distinguished Production of a Musical and Distinguished Performance.

Million Dollar Quartet is produced by Relevant Theatricals, John Cossette Productions, American Pop Anthology and Broadway Across America.
