AJFF Says ‘I Do’ to Films All Year
The festival's AJFF Selects series kicks off May 11 with the award-winning romantic comedy "The Wedding Plan."
The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival is launching the AJFF Selects series with a screening of the Israeli romantic comedy “The Wedding Plan” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Lefont Sandy Springs.
AJFF Selects is meant to bring movies good enough for the annual winter film festival to the Atlanta area during the rest of the year. The special screening events will feature new foreign and independent films, as well as expert speakers and guest filmmakers.
“With programming initiatives like the AJFF Selects, we have the opportunity to continue our conversation with the community and expand our artistic footprint all year long,” festival Executive Director Kenny Blank said. “We’re excited to unveil more films in the Selects series soon. This is just the beginning of new program offerings from AJFF.”
AJFF initiatives to deliver year-round programming include AJFF on Campus, an educational outreach; Cinebash, a nontraditional film party; the Icon Award gala, an event dedicated to honoring exemplary movie artists and industry professionals; and AJFF in Conversation, a series of talks with leading community figures.
The film chosen to kick off AJFF Selects, “The Wedding Plan,” comes from writer-director Rama Burshtein.
An ultra-Orthodox woman named Michal (played by Noa Koler) decides to keep her wedding date after her fiancé breaks off the engagement a month before the ceremony. She is unwilling to return to the loneliness of single life and has faith that she’ll find a suitable groom in time.
Comedy ensues as Michal enlists various matchmakers and endures horrible blind dates in her exhaustive search for a spouse.
Nominated for nine Israeli Academy Awards, “The Wedding Plan” was nominated for nine Israeli Academy Awards and won two: best actress and best screenplay. Koler also was named best actress at the Haifa International Film Festival.
The movie is a nominee for best film at the Venice Film Festival and is an official selection of the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival. Beyond the AJFF, “The Wedding Plan” is scheduled to open in Atlanta on Friday, May 26.
